Fabric 78 - Post-medieval red ware


Hard, oxidised fabric containing moderate, well-sorted quartz, occasional white inclusions and occasional iron-rich pellets <1mm.
Generally oxidised throughout, although later examples can be poorly mixed and have bands of yellowish-buff clay.

Decoration
Often decorated with an iron rich black or brown glaze, often over a red slip. Glaze can vary with early examples being metallic silver black, giving way to dark brown/black from the later 17th century. Can also be slip decorated, with slip-trailing, combing and feathering techniques commonly seen.
Various, STAFFORDSHIRE
Perhaps the most commonly found post-medieval pottery type in Worcestershire.
