Fabric 43.3 - East Gaulish samian ware (Rheinzabern)


Hard fabric with a mixture of well-sorted inclusions including black iron-rich grains, limestone and mica, all measuring between 0.1-0.2mm and quartz of <0.4mm in size.
Varies from orange-brown to pale dull pink in colour (Tomber and Dore 1998, 39).


Manufacture
Mould-made; decorated wares were mould-made, plain wares appear to have been made on the wheel (Webster 1996, 4-5).
Decoration
Reasonable quality dark red brown slip, often pimply but lustrous. Plain forms were sometimes decorated using barbotine or roulettes, decorated forms were mould decorated (Webster 1996, 5).
Rheinzabern (Roman Gaul), GERMANY
East Gaulish samian ware was produced on a number of different sites, the Rheinzabern fabric being just one of a number. The wares commonly occur in Rhineland, eastern Gaul, Danube provinces and throughout Britain, although more sparse in occurence in the west and most common in the south-east (Tyers 1996, 114). Samian ware of this fabric has been found in small quantities on sites throughout Worcester and in Droitwich.
Roman (Mid 1st to mid 3rd century AD )
This particular East Gaulish ware was dominant from the later 2nd century (Tyers 1996, 114)
