How to use this database in conjunction with the Worcestershire Historic Environment Record
The Worcestershire Online Ceramic Database is designed to work as a stand-alone resource but can be combined with other services provided by Worcestershire Historic Environment Record (HER) to produce information tailored to your specific needs. For information on our resources and who to contact
Here are two examples of how we can help you:
Are you researching the history of your parish?
You can request us to search the HER for all the known archaeological sites within your parish or just for those of a particular period. You will receive records of all the sites that fit your criteria. This information can be provided in a variety of formats but you can also come and visit the HER and discuss the results with us. Each site record contains a list of the bibliographic references for that site. Many of these will be desk-top published reports which you can find using our
Online Archaeology Library or books you can get from your local library. Where any of these reports contains a section on pottery the different fabric types will be identified using the same numbers as this Online Ceramic Database so that it easy to see how your parish fits into the bigger picture. There will be a charge for this service.
Are you writing a report on pottery from fieldwalking or excavation within Worcestershire?
You can request a search of the HER for all sites with pottery of a particular period from any defined area around your site e.g. a 2km radius or all the surrounding parishes or the whole county. You will receive records of all the sites that fit your criteria. This information can be provided in a variety of formats. Each site record contains a list of bibliographic references for that site. Many of these will be desktop published reports which you can find using our
Online Archaeology Library. The reports will contain a section on pottery which identifies the fabric types using the same numbers as this Online Ceramic Database. By using both together you can rapidly set your site within a regional context. There will be a charge for this service.
